Investigation Continues Following Fatal Crash

A fatal crash Wednesday afternoon in Miami County remains under investigation by the State Highway Patrol. It happened in a construction zone along southbound I-75 near County Road 25-A. First reports indicate the driver, a 76-year old woman, struck the rear of a water tanker. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. A male passenger was taken to Upper Valley Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Commissioners Seek New County HR Director

Miami County Commissioners have approved an agreement for professional human resources services following the recent firing of the county’s HR director. An agreement with Maurice Evans was signed Tuesday for the period of Sept. 15 through Dec. 31, 2020, at a cost of $50 per hour, not to exceed 20 hours per week unless otherwise approved by the commissioners.

Lucky Lemonade Series Finale

The season finale for the Troy Hayner Cultural Center’s Lucky Lemonade series is next Tuesday (Sept 22) at 6:30p.m. A few free tickets remain for the Courtyard concert featuring the Latin rhythms the Dayton Salsa Project. Tipp City Woman Pleads Guilty

A Tipp City woman who retired in May from Hobart Arena after more than 20 years of service, entered a guilty plea Wednesday to theft in office. According to reports, 60-year old Cheryl Terry began depositing cash into her personal bank account beginning in 2017 from concession stand funds, cash from rental and lease agreements and drop in sessions at the arena. Investigation revealed a grand total of $267,000 had been taken. Sentencing is scheduled for October 26.

Vietnam Memorial Wall Coming To Area

The traveling Vietnam Memorial Wall is coming to Versailles. A POW-MIA Honor Weekend will be celebrated beginning today through Saturday at Marker Road and Grand Avenue. In addition to the Wall, there will be military vehicles and chow trailers on hand. Recognition Day is on Saturday (Sept. 18) at 5 PM. POW/MIA military men and women will be honored with a 21-gun salute and ceremony.

Sidney Man Succumbs To Injuries

A Sidney area man died Tuesday from injuries suffered while working to make repairs on a semi-trailer on Cisco Road near Fort Loramie. Preliminary investigation indicates 25-year old Evan Winner of Mason Road was attempting to make repairs to an air brake line. Winner was taken to to Miami Valley Hospital and succumbed to the injuries he received from the mishap.

Sidney-Shelby County COVID-19 Numbers

The Sidney-Shelby County Health Department reported Wednesday seven new cases of COVID-19 for a total to 541 cases. The new cases involve a girl in the 10-19 age range, a woman in her 20s, a man and two women in their 50s, a woman in her 60s, and a man in his 70s. Eight people in the Shelby County have died as a result of COVID-19. They include one woman in her 50s, one man in his 70s, two men and two women in their 80s, and two men in their 90s.

Charity Drill Competition

A drill competition for charity was held this past Saturday at the West Milton Municipal Park. Young Marines from Ohio, Michigan, Illinois and West Virginia gathered participated as part of the Drill Heroes 2: Knockout Drill for a Cause fundraiser. Sponsored by the Miami Valley Young Marines, the Drill Heroes 2 competition raised a total of $3,000 towards completion of the West Milton Veterans’ Memorial.

Master Gardeners Series

The next session of the Miami County Master Gardeners series is October 2. The virtual session features Dr. Curtis Young who will present “Blue Spruce Blues covering some common conifer pests and diseases and strategies for overcoming these problems.
